Discover Tranquility: A Retreat at Charlottesville's Historical Clifton Hotel
Join this couple on a restful journey at The Historical Clifton Hotel, exploring its 1799 colonial-style charm, modern amenities, and enchanting Thanksgiving retreat amid the Blue Ridge Mountains. Immerse yourself in the magic of stillness, savory cuisine at the 1799 Restaurant, and serenity by The Clifton's private lake.
In a year that seems to have tested everyone, be it due to global unrest, post-pandemic chaos, or the natural process of aging, moments of respite have become increasingly crucial. While every year brings its share of upsides, the relentless pursuit of building a better future often leads to exhaustion, burnout, and stress.
As the visionary Leonardo da Vinci once aptly stated:
"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work, your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller, and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen."
Gotta Get Away
We couldn't agree more with our man Leo.
As a dynamic Gemini/Aries couple, we are constantly on the move—physically and, more frequently, mentally. Pedro, the Aries half of our partnership, brings an impulsive nature, a penchant for taking action, and a leadership style filled with passion, creating an atmosphere of fast-paced dynamism and excitement. Meanwhile, James, the Gemini, contributes intellectual curiosity, a mind buzzing with ideas, and a versatile approach to trying new things. Together, we form an energetic duo that embraces spontaneity, shares a need for independence, and always seeks out exciting adventures.
One constant in our whirlwind of activities is the recognition that stepping away allows our minds to perform at their best. Taking a break offers valuable perspective, making challenges seem more manageable and our capabilities more formidable. Even a brief pause, a day or two of stillness, can transform a force always in motion into something magical.
The Clifton Hotel
Our recent Thanksgiving break was particularly enchanting as we chose to unwind in the serene 100 Virginian acres surrounding The Historical Clifton Hotel, just minutes from Downtown Charlottesville.
The Clifton Hotel, with a history as rich as its surroundings, was originally constructed in 1799 as a classic colonial-style home for Thomas Jefferson’s daughter and her husband, Martha and Thomas Mann Randolph. In the late 19th century, the estate officially took on the name "Clifton" under the ownership of the Wyatt family. In Spring 2018, the current proprietors engaged the award-winning Blackberry Farm Design team to reimagine the Inn's interiors, blending past styles with a contemporary twist. The result is a chic take on a classic country estate, a dramatic and romantic destination for various occasions steeped in Charlottesville's heritage and beauty. Made up of 20 guest rooms spread across five late 18th and early 19th-century buildings, a restaurant, bar, lounge, wine cellar, infinity pool, hot tub, private lake, walking trails, croquet lawn, and sprawling gardens, The Clifton offers a haven that effortlessly marries history and modern luxury. No matter where we found ourselves on the property, we enjoyed sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Jefferson’s Monticello.
1799 Restaurant
The jewel in The Clifton's crown has got to be the 1799 Restaurant. The sun-drenched veranda and enclosed patio offer views of the Virginia countryside, white the beautiful interior provides a historic yet modern vibe. Think beautiful library. The seasonal menus spotlight local ingredients, many sourced from the Chef’s garden, creating some delicious cuisine.
The Private Lake
The Clifton's private lake beckoned us with the promise of tranquility. Whether you bring a book, a yoga mat, or a picnic, this cherished spot is perfect for stealing away and savoring the serenity of the beautiful surroundings.
In the embrace of The Clifton's historical charm and modern comforts, our Thanksgiving break became a retreat, allowing us to recharge, gain perspective, and savor the magic of stillness amid the busy currents of life.
